A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
